Today
was yet gain another incredible day! We went to the breeding centre
and helped to clean out a black rhino’s boma (enclosure) which was
amazing. This was after we had watched it run around, charging and
snorting… the vet gave him the tranquilliser dart…once we climbed
inside we were able to stay close to it and actually stroke it. For one
of Africa’s most endangered and dangerous animals this was amazing! Kylie
It feels like a dream being this close to something so dangerous and so rare. Charlene
What
a day! we were up-close and personal with a beast. Sheer muscle, speed,
agility – a black rhino. We had been given the privilege and honour of
watching them dart the animal before his examination. We had the
chance to feel and caress the rhino too, totally awesome!
In the
afternoon we went to an erosion site. We learnt how to maintain a
balance in a specific biosphere. Erosion, soil types, rock types and
plant types were a just a few factors which we became familiar with. Riaz
We
learnt how Shamwari are dealing with erosion and we actually got hands
on, digging and building structures that would prevent landslides. It
was so good to know we were putting something back into the environment
that has given us so much! Kylie

Day 8 Transfer from Shamwari to Zululand |
| Tuesday, 27 June 2006 |

It’s silly but I wish this week hadn’t been so amazing because then it would be easier to move onto our next destination. But to think about the last week and everything I have done is so hard to put into perspective without feeling depressed! I have learnt an incredible amount this week, more than I have ever learnt in my life!...I have seen my first constellations, been interested in plants for the first time…I’ve spent the week not feeling I have to wear makeup for the first time and my self-esteem has tripled…I have made friends for life and above all I have spent such a long time laughing! Kylie
We were totally amazed when we arrived at Durban airport, so many different nationalities and cultures, not to forget all those colourful taxis. KwaZulu Nata – a place with it’s won vibe –real cool. When we arrived in the village we were greeted by men and women of all ages, with kind eyes and broad smiles…I already feel a sense of warmth, acceptance and joy. Riaz
We arrived here at KwaZulu Natal! It’s an amazing place that resembles something of a dream world. Dramatic valleys covered in microcosms of societies living in small huts, faced together to make a family commune. Jack
We were led to the main hut…we were given Zulu made beer to welcome us…we had such a delicious supper after that, so much to choose from. In Zulu culture the men do everything first, so that’s a bit of a bummer for me really!! Waseela
I’m enjoying the trademark of this place: ‘Men First’ Ha Ha! Riaz
