Day 1 Shamwari Game Reserve |
| Tuesday, 20 June 2006 |
|
We travelled by plane today which was very exciting, it was my first flight. Many South Africans don’t have the opportunity to fly in a plane at all, so I consider myself lucky. Then we arrived at Shamwari and I went blind with all of the beauty I saw. Delano
Well today was truly the experience of a lifetime. Being out in the ‘wild’ as I have been today, has actually made me appreciate being a South African. Driving through the mountains and watching them run past me, is a sight I can’t seem to erase in my mind. Waseela
Today we visited the Born Free Sanctuary which houses animals mistreated by humans. They have been rescued but they will never be able to be re-released into the wild. It was sad to see the animals caged but it made me more aware of what these animals have had to deal with…it was mistreatment by humans that brought them here. Jessica

Day 2 Shamwari Game Reserve |
| Wednesday, 21 June 2006 |
Today we witnessed the importation and release of two white rhino into the game reserve. This was simply one of the most amazing experiences of my life. The process took about an hour as they were released back into their natural habitat. I found the experience to be entirely humbling….overall today was absolutely moving. I have learned and experienced more in one day than I would have in a year ordinarily. Jack
Today was amazing! we feel like we’ve done so much in so little time. We’ve seen springbok, zebra, elephants, lions, giraffe and leopard. We also had the most amazing opportunity to see two rhinos being released. It’s been brilliant. Lauren |

Day 3 Shamwari Game Reserve |
| | | Today totally changed the way I feel. Riding around in the cold really relaxed me. I embraced the wind and even though the beautiful summer of January should be gone and the leaves should all be brown, the view was amazing. I loved it. This trip is going to be amazing and it will help me to appreciate life more – a greater responsibility toward the environment is inevitable! Crystal | |

Day 4 Shamwari Game Reserve |
|
Friday, 23 June 2006 Todaywill be the one day I will never forget for the rest of my life, all of us huddled together because we were so cold! We saw warthog, impala, springbok, an elephant that was only 7metres away! Then we were10metres away from 2 lionesses! An elephant & her baby, somegiraffe, 4 rhino that we monitored and had to find which rhino we hadfound using the animal identification books. I have found out so muchin the last few days! It’s unbelievable! Kylie Wewent to a home for underprivileged children today. It made meexperience a touch of pain in my heart. I wanted to burst into tears.Meeting and playing with all of these unique and wonderful children hasactually opened me up in a sense where I personally would love to makea difference in the world. Each child who was playing was reallyenjoying what they were doing…. saying Hello and putting a smile ontheir face, but behind closed doors or deep down, this is absolutelynot how they feel, I mean, waking up on empty stomachs and not havingenough clothes to wear…it’s really making me think…..Waseela TodayI realised that life is a gift. We went to a home in a local villagethat deals with quite a lot of hectic situations with almost nofunds. It was a very emotional experience. It showed me that havingmoney isn’t everything. Those children have nothing, yet they have somuch happiness. I really value life more. Crystal |
